10 Things to Look For In A Laptop

You may have already made up your mind on which brand of laptop you need and the list of features you’re looking for. Even with those filters in mind, you would have to pick from tens or hundreds of options.

World of laptops has grown so much so that you have more device models to choose from. Don’t even think about random selection, folks. IT DOESN’T WORK.

So, to help you get through the wonderful collection, we created a list of 10 things to look for in a laptop. These are some general aspects to make sure that you are getting a worth-buying computer. Shall we begin?

#1 A Suitable OS

Nothing is as crucial as choosing the right Operating System for the laptop. Of course, you must also consider the aspect of software compatibility.

If you were planning to edit videos via Final Cut Pro, you definitely need a laptop running macOS. In comparison, macOS may also offer better performance — of course, with some throttling.

On the other hand, Microsoft Windows is the popular option while there are enthusiasts who say Hail Linux, for a good reason. The selection of OS is basically your own preference.

#2 A Well-Powered Processor

Known to us as the brain of the computer, your going-to-be laptop should have the best processor that has the most suitable performance. If you are getting the laptop for basic work like Word Processing, browsing or something else, you can go for a low-end processor.

On the other hand, if you are thinking of gaming or heavy-duty work like video editing or graphics designing, you should aim higher. It’s also recommended to get a newer-generation CPU if you have a choice.

#3 Enough RAM

RAM is something important, no matter what you are using the laptop for. Even when you have a medium-end processor, extra amount of RAM will make a difference. Nowadays, laptop come with a minimum RAM of 4GB, and you should not go for anything less than that.

When it comes to MacBooks, however, there is a difference. Those machines use some advanced RAM management tech. However, in case of Windows, we’d recommend 8GB RAM or higher.

#4 I/O and Connectivity

Do you manage different accessories and peripheral devices every day? Do you want to connect many USBs at the same time? If so, you should get a laptop with better Input Output. It basically designates the number of ports and slots in the device.

While standard USB ports are becoming obsolete in high-end devices, you’d love one if you are getting the laptop for work. In addition to these, you should consider the aspect of wired and wireless connectivity, like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and more.

#5 Sufficient Screen Size

Gone are days when devices with bigger screen naturally had more weight. Manufacturers are now coming up with devices that combine 14-inch or 15-inch screen and portable weight. So, it means that you can focus on the actual screen size you need, instead of worrying about the weight.

Of course, if that’s the case, you will have to spend a bit more. That having said, we’d say the extra money is better than compromising your productivity by using a small-sized display.

#6 Weight and Portability

You should look for the aspects of weight and portability for sure. As we said earlier, if you are looking for a workstation-type laptop, you should expect some weight. The same would be applicable for most of the gaming laptops out there.

However, if you are ready to pay something extra, there are some cool options. Take the case of Apple MacBook, for instance. They offer one hell of a performance, without even weighing the half of a Windows heavy-duty laptop. Awesome, isn’t it?

#7 Performance and Design

Just because a device has enough RAM and a suitable Processor does not mean that the performance is good for you. You should consider if the laptop has been designed for your purpose — say, gaming or video editing for that matter.

However, if you need a high-performance device, you would need some accessories like one laptop cooling pad, so that heat issues won’t affect the hardware. Also, make sure that the design is suitable for the resource consumption.

#8 Keyboard and Trackpad

Manufacturers have been trying so hard to bring the best experience of typing and cursor movement. When it comes to the case of keyboard, you should get something strong and with a good key-travel, especially if you type a lot of things.

In case of Trackpad, you should see if the Windows comes with precision drivers — which can offer a smoother experience. In comparison, Apple laptops are noted for their more effective and glass-made trackpads.

#9 Graphics That You Need

If you are into gaming or high-end video editing, you need dedicated graphics support for the laptop. Here’s the thing: despite a few exceptions, dedicated graphics is directly proportional to the weight and size, since the card would take up space and the device will need better air ventilation.

So, if you need a laptop with a superb graphics capability, you should be able to spend some money and compromise on portability. Also, thanks to the crypto boom, graphics cards have been on fire.

#10 Battery Life

Don’t expect your i7-16GB beast laptop to offer 15 Hours of battery backup. Of course, there will be a time when you get that, but not now. You should have a realistic expectation when it comes to a laptop battery life. If you need a portable, medium-performance device, you can get around 10 to 15 hours.

On the other hand, if you need the best performance and out-of-the-box graphics, you should be okay with less than 10. What we mean to say is that you should learn to satisfy yourself with the battery life.

Wrapping Up

It’s not like that you can’t ignore all these and a good laptop. However, not all products from so-called best brands are good-enough for you. So, it’d be great if you can get your own input while choosing the lap, that you won’t have to rant about the 4-Hour battery life after two weeks.
